Looking for an inexpensive way to add a cam to your TC96? There are ways to upgrade your bike without breaking the bank if you are innovating and are willing to break with convention. There are some very nice bolt-in cams for the TC-96 engines available that offer the same or better power potential than the HD 103 upgrade does. Because installing cams does not 'break the seal' on the top end of the engine, overall reliability should be maintained and you do not have to worry about some torque sensitive components on the engine (heads/cylinders).
So how do you built your Recession Tuning special engine?
First you need to pick a cam. Cams like the Andrews TW-26H or Andrews TW-54H should work very well for this upgrade. There are similar cams available from CycleRama, Black Widow, Kuryakn and several other sources. These are strong low/mid range performance cams, something that you want on the 07> later bikes with the 6-speed gear boxes. You also want to get an adjustable pushrod kit. We like the S&S Pushrod kit. We have heard of some riders installing cams like the TW-21/TW-26/TW-54 on stock ECMs without any remapping and only using XIED's. Not something we encourange, but it has been done. These are not riders who are looking for wide open throttle power or big numbers on a dyno sheet.
Normally, you would expect to have to purchase an expensive EFI remapping tool. This could be SE Super Tuner, TTS software or PowerCommander for an upgrade like this. Now comes the "recession tuning" part of our upgrade. Run down to your local HD Dealer and have them install the HD Stage 2 103 Download. This download is for a 103 engine and SE-255 cam. It is also an emissions complient upgrade, so it takes advantage of the OEM closed loop adjustments and the O2 sensors. Yes, this means the normal AFR is 14.6:1, but your tuning download only cost you $149 + $75 installation. The engine will run fine at 14.6:1 while cruising and will have a 12.5-13.0:1 AFR at wide open throttle.
